the may long.

Here are some highlights from the past long weekend:
  • I helped out with a youth conference this past weekend where my friends band, Everyother, played a show. Most of the guys in the band are from Edmonton, and two of them actually went to the same elementary school as me. It was the first time that I had heard them play live and it was a great show.

  • Had my first Frappuccino of the summer. Since May-long is kind of like the kick-start to summer, I thought what better time to have my favorite cold blended coffee drink...(is it me or are those cups getting smaller and smaller...??)

  • On Monday, SJ and I went to camp and played tennis. It was a little interesting at the beginning because both of us hadn't played in a while, but soon we got the hang of it. I was Sharapova and she was Vanessa Williams. We want to be pros by the end of the summer.

  • I went to a small acoustic show put on by a guy named Simon Hoskyn . He's from Vancouver and is amazing on guitar. If you like music you can just chill out too, check him out!

the awkward security line.

When I flew home on this past Tuesday I came to the conclusion that the airport security lines are one of the most awkward experiences. First of all, the workers are all so serious. You feel like if you look at them wrong they are going to take you into a back room and interrogate you. And then they make you take pretty much EVERYTHING out of your perfectly packed carry-on bag. If you have a laptop that has to go in a separate box, and then your ziplock of liquid items goes in another box. Then you have to take off your jacket and sometimes your shoes. After walking through the metal detector (not even mentioning the awkward possible pat-down), you go to the end of the line to gather all your stuff and try and put it back the way you had it. I always feel like there is all this pressure to get your things quickly because other peoples stuff is coming right behind yours and there is not very much room. The last thing you would want to do is get those workers mad at you for holding up the line...

I've had them do these weird tests on my laptop before. They wipe the outside with a little piece of cloth and then stick it in a machine and it will tell them if my computer is a bomb or not. Weird. All in all, I understand that they are doing everything for the safety of all passengers, but I can't help but think its just an all around awkward situation. I left the security line on Tuesday thinking..."boy, imagine doing that with kids..."

the land before time.

So I sat down tonight to see what was on TV and while I was flipping through the channels I came across a classic movie from my childhood. Land Before Time. Luckily it was just starting so I sat down to watch. Two things struck me as I was watching. The first, was how familiar the movie felt to me. I must have watched it 5 or 6 times as a child, so everything that happened or was said seemed like I had just watched it yesterday. The second thing was that as a children's movie it had some pretty sad moments. When Littlefoot's mother dies because she was trying to fight Sharptooth, that almost (I said almost) brings a tear to your eye. Or when there was the huge earthquake that made the great divide and separated all the families. I don't know how I didn't grow up being petrified of earthquakes. The original movie was a great hit, so they have made many...many sequels...12 to be exact. The last one came out this year, but of course none would come even close to the original. Anyone else have any classic childhood movies?

the whoa nelly.

On Friday night we had some girls from camp come visit us from the coast. It was one of their birthdays that day, so a bunch of us got together for dinner. When we got home, I got a call on my phone. It was the guy that use to live in our apartment and he asked if I wanted to go see Nelly Furtado who had a show in Kelowna that night. He had two 12th row tickets on the floor and wasn't going to be using them. So we (we being the birthday girl and myself) told him we would take them, and booked it down to the arena because she was starting in 20 min.

The concert was really good. She played a variety of older songs like "Try", "Powerless" and a remix of "I'm Like a Bird", and a fabulous cover of Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy". Of course the concert would not be complete if she didn't play her hit songs off her most recent album "Loose". She had some unbelievable back-up dancers. I was watching them most of the time just because they were amazing and made me want to take up hip-hop dancing.

What a great random-spur of the moment-great birthday present- night!

the dark blue transformation.

Old OfficeNew Office
Before it was called my office, someone had the great idea of painting 2 big walls in a small small office DARK BLUE. First of all, we all know that painting walls a dark color makes the room look smaller (and if you didn't know that, you should). And secondly, it makes it very difficult to paint over it. I have been wanting to paint my office ever since I started working there and we finally had to opportunity. After a long day of moving furniture, priming the walls, painting the first coat, answering the phone while our office was dismantled, repainting a wall because we changed our minds on the color, and finishing the second coat, we have the finished product as seen above. The color is a grey-brown, and its amazing the difference it makes.

the 3 words you hate to hear..or read.

Guess what time of year it is...?? Roll Up The Rim time!! The time of year when Tim Horton's sales increase by 50% just because everyone wants a chance to win. I had my first RUTR cup last week when I was home visiting. I was so excited it was back and was pumped to roll it up. Of course I wait till I'm finished to pry up the little lip. BUT when the time came to roll it up, I was visiting a friend at her work who I hadn't seen in a long time and we were having kind of a serious conversation. When we got up to leave I just chucked my cup into the garbage WITHOUT ROLLING IT UP!! I didn't even realize what I was doing. It was probably 3 hours later it hit me. I thought to myself, hey I don't remember rolling up the rim on my cup...then my mind started running...thinking, ok where the heck did I put that cup! Eventually I remembered I had thrown in the garbage at my friends work. Then I started to panic. WHAT IF IT WAS A WINNING CUP!? Maybe I could go back tomorrow to get it, but no, they clean out their garbage EVERY night! I have been trying not to think about my lost cup, and thankfully I'm not back home anymore to hear about some janitor winning from a garbage cup. What a great way to start off the RUTR season.

Since then I have had two more coffees. And both times it has come up with those 3 hateful words...Please Play Again. So my RUTR cup count is 0/2....well more like 0/3. The first one I'm counting as a loss, a major loss. But I'm keeping my spirits high and hopeful. I'm hoping for the plasma big screen TV, but I would seriously take a free coffee. Anyone else have any luck?

the end of an era.

This past Thursday night I sat down and watched the series finale of The O.C. The news was released about a month ago that the show would be ending with only a few episodes left. I was an O.C fan when it first started, back in the day, along with every other high school kid. But as the series went on, the show became more and more lame. The finale was definite proof of that. I hadn't really been watching too many shows this season, but I wanted to see how they ended it. Boy was I lost. They had been trying to create so much out of nothing this season, that everything was soo ridiculous.

But what is with these writers who come up with shows that have a 2-3 season lifespan with concepts that can only be expanded so much? When the O.C first started it was edgy and drew in a large following. But then they had to keep up their following with the same kind of edginess but they just didn't have it in them. Two other shows that probably will face the same demise as the O.C. (I'm afraid to say) are Prison Break and Lost. At the end of the first season of Prison Break, they broke out of prison. So how long can you carry on a show called Prison Break when they are already out of prison? Or Lost... there is only so long the producers will be able to drag viewers along in mass confusion and crazy unrealistic plots.

I don't want to sound like I'm completely bashing the shows because in fact I think their plots are great. But its just too bad that shows that were once high in ratings and were nominated for awards are slowly overstaying their welcome. Instead of being remembered as a great show, people will find themselves watching it and then after wonder why they bothered. Its kind of like eating cake...You could just keep eating piece after piece because you think its good, but then after the 7th piece you realize you should have stopped at 2.

wow...I guess I missed blogging
